Victoria battery & VPP offers

What does the battery offer pay after the joining credit?

A discount can make a battery quote look attractive on day one. Before accepting it, separate the once-only payment from the ongoing arrangement: who controls the battery, what they pay and what it costs you to participate.

Check the offer attached to your equipment

Solar Victoria explains that a virtual power plant connects household batteries and that providers differ in compatibility, incentives and battery-use conditions. Check the actual model and contract, including discharge limits and management events. Read Solar Victoria’s VPP explanation.

For ordinary solar exports, do not assume an old regulated minimum still applies. EWOV says Victorian retailers have set their own feed-in tariffs since 1 July 2025, with a floor of zero. Check EWOV’s current guidance. Record the retailer export rate separately from any special VPP event payment.

A three-year illustration

This invented offer pays $300 once on joining and $120 each year for participation. Suppose participation also increases the household’s net electricity cost by $80 a year compared with operating the same battery independently. That cost difference could include extra imports and changed export credits; it must be measured or modelled, not assumed to be zero.

  • First year: $300 + $120 − $80 = $340.
  • Second year: $120 − $80 = $40.
  • Third year: $120 − $80 = $40.
  • Three-year total: $340 + $40 + $40 = $420.

This is a partial comparison before any additional fees or battery wear, not a profit forecast. It assumes the recurring amounts stay unchanged and all payments are earned. Multiplying the first-year result by three would produce $1,020 and count the joining credit three times.

Repeat the calculation without the joining credit and with a higher participation cost. In this illustration, ongoing benefit reaches zero when that annual cost reaches $120. Ask what evidence supports the cost estimate in your offer.

Keep the battery saving out of the VPP payment column

Use the same installed battery in both comparisons: one operated for the household, the other under the proposed VPP arrangement. Savings from storing your own solar are not automatically an extra benefit of joining a VPP.

Write down joining payments, recurring credits and event payments separately. For event payments, check whether the quoted figure is guaranteed, capped, estimated or dependent on dispatch. Put repayment conditions and exit fees beside the incentive they relate to. An unearned maximum belongs in a scenario, not the guaranteed-income column.

Who can change the reserve?

If backup is part of your reason for buying, ask the provider to identify the contract clause governing the energy held back for the home. Establish who can change that setting, whether it applies during every event and what happens if communications fail.

Then have the installer explain which circuits can actually run during a power cut. A contractual reserve and an installed backup circuit answer different questions. Keep both answers with the quote rather than treating a percentage in an app as a complete backup plan.

Ask for the event record you will receive: dispatch times, energy taken or supplied and credits earned. That record lets you check whether the household’s experience matches the offer calculation.

Price the exit as well as the entry

Request written answers for three situations: you change retailer, you sell the home, or the provider stops supporting your battery. Record any repayment, notice period, removal of remote control and continuing equipment support. Do not assume a battery purchase and a VPP subscription end together.

Solar Victoria also states that its interest-free battery loans are closed to new applications. If a quote includes finance or an incentive, have the seller name the current programme or lender and show the terms separately from VPP earnings.

Prepare a battery quote brief and include your backup and control preferences. Still deciding capacity? Start with the battery size guide.
